I weighed in at 78 kilos or 171.6 pounds this morning. I started my little black book of numbers (calories) on February 13th. On that day I weighed 81 kilos or 178.2 pounds, just 13 days ago. I am very happy considering I cheated a couple times.
Not too soon before all of that, say a month ago I weighed 84 kilos or 185 pounds. That was my breaking point. I had just returned from visiting home for the first time in a year. My mom kindly hinted I should be careful of my weight for my health. Very subtle, not too hurtful. What was hurtful was when one of the head directors I work with came up to me, laughing, in front of everyone, and asked some questions in her not so tactful way.
“Did you…*snort*…eat over vacation?”
“Huh?” (I’m not hearing this right? Must be bad English?)
“I’m sorry…*laughing*…I meant did you eat a lot over vacation? You look more big.”
Awesome. I feigned stupidity hoping she would feel stupid for making such a comment. No dice. I was embarrassed to say the least. I’m not skinny by anyone’s standards but most people would agree I am heavy. I went from the high end of my healthy weight range to overweight during Christmas vacation. That day at work I was the only American. Yay to me for helping uphold the stereotype of Americans being fat. Boo on her for not upholding the stereotype of Japanese very being polite and tactful.
It’s hard enough being a woman in a country where most stores carry Western size ranges of 00, 0, 2, 4, and 6. You read that correctly. Size 6 is a large size and size zero is common. To add insult to injury, I wear a size 26 shoe here which is unheard of. The largest size they have is 25 if you’re lucky. And the shoes here are so cute! I can’t buy clothes or shoes. I never cared about clothes or shoes so much until I couldn’t buy them. I do live near Tokyo so there are some larger sizes to be had if I look hard enough, but trust me when I say the selection is of that which not even my dead grandmother would wear. Everything my size repulses me to look at. Cute shoes in all colors and styles are for small feet, large feet get black or beige granny shoes. Cute, classy clothing with beautiful cuts are for petite Japanese women with no bum or bosom, not curvier Western women. Even if I did magically become a size 6 I still would be too voluptuous to fit into most clothes here. And I like my curves, just not that ones that spill over the top of my pants.
