Today was super busy, no time at work to eat. For breakfast I had the sweet and spicy shrimp salad you see pictured in my last post. I had strawberries as a snack shortly before leaving for work around noon (I keep odd hours). And then work! I inhaled some pistachios at one point to keep myself from keeling over but it really was too busy to eat. I had also brought an apple and a mandarin orange but alas it was not meant to be. Dinner at Coco’s was delish: chicken quesadillas and a a salad. The menu said it was a caesar salad but since when does caesar salad have tomato, raw bacon (?) and watered down ranch dressing? Eh, not the greatest thing ever but I ordered it because it had the lowest calories. I just picked off the bacon and most of the dressing.
Interesting Japan note: asking for no bacon would have been unheard of. They can’t conceive of doing that sort of thing, you order it the way it is shown on the menu only. Also, I often eat vegetarian and have requested no meat only to find pork or ham lurking in my meal. I’ve even bought prepackaged vegetable sandwiches and found ham in them! Since when is ham a vegetable? Bleh, I hate pork and ham!
While I’m talking about food I just want to point out that any Western style food here has been modified to better fit the taste preferences of Japan. And this is also true of other countries with foreign foods. Japanese food in America is way different than the Japanese food here in Japan I assure you. So while the salad wasn’t my thing it was Japan’s idea of a Western style salad albeit, tweaked to suit their tastes. Another example of this here would cottage cheese. I was super psyched to find some at the store the other day. I love cottage cheese! Imagine my surprise to discover the texture and taste was more like a cross between cream cheese and ricotta cheese than that of my beloved cottage cheese. It was quite good really, sometimes I put it on toast as a high protein spread. But for the most part I am going on a diet with totally foreign foods and it’s tough. Have you ever had natto? I hadn’t until recently but thought I would try it. Won’t do that again. Sometimes I win (cottage cheese) and sometimes I lose (natto) when I play the taste test game.
I’m thinking an open-face ranchos huevos sandwich for breakfast tomorrow. Or maybe muesli with almond soy milk.
